Shubman Gill captained the Indian team in the recently concluded 5 match series against England. Gill, a 25 year old right handed batter from Punjab had a series to remember. Across 10 innings he scored 754 runs, 4 centuries in the process. He was the top scorer and broke many batting and captaincy records in the process. Let’s see some of his achievements.
Records Achieved By Shubman Gill In The Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy
1. 754 runs in 5 tests against England is a new record for most runs in a test series between these two teams. He surpassed Graham Gooch’s record of 752 runs in 3 matches in 1990 series.
2. 754 runs also helped Gill break Sunil Gavaskar’s Indian record of 732 runs against West Indies in 1978-79 for most runs by an Indian captain in a test series. Only Don Bradman of Australia has scored more runs as captain in a test series with 810 runs to his name.
3. Gill is the first Asian batter to reach 700 runs in a test series in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia). Before him Virat Kohli held the record with 692 runs in Australia in 2014-15 series.
4. Gill broke Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record of 712 runs for most runs by an Asian batter in a test series against England.
5. Gill also broke Mohammad Yousuf’s record of 631 runs for most runs by an Asian batter in a test series in England.
6. Gill is only the third captain ever to score 4 centuries in a test series after Don Bradman (1947-48 vs India) and Sunil Gavaskar (1978-79 vs West Indies).
7. Gill is the first Asian captain to score a double century in a test match in SENA countries. Before this Tillakaratne Dilshan held the highest score of 193 against England at Lord’s in 2011.8. In the second test alone Gill scored 430 runs (269 in the first innings and 161 in the second) breaking the record for most runs in a test match away from home. Mark Taylor of Australia held the record with 426 runs against Pakistan in Peshawar in 1998.
9. Gill’s 269 in the first innings of the second test at Edgbaston broke Virat Kohli’s record for highest individual score by an Indian captain in tests which was 254 against South Africa in 2019.
10. Gill is only the second captain after Kohli to score 3 centuries in his first 2 tests as captain. Gill scored 147 in the first test at Headingley and 269 and 161 in the two innings of the second test at Edgbaston. Kohli scored 115 and 141 in Adelaide (December 2014) and 147 and 46 in Sydney in his first 2 tests as India captain against Australia.

11.He is only the second captain after Gavaskar to score a century in his first Test and a double century in the next. Gavaskar scored 116 against New Zealand in Auckland in 1976 when he first captained the team. Two years later in 1978, he scored 205 against the West Indies in Mumbai in the first half of his second Test as captain.
12.He joins Allan Border as the second player to score 150+ in both innings of a Test match. Border remained not out with 150 in the first innings and added 153 in the second in the 1980 Pakistan vs Australia Test in Lahore. Gill went one better, scoring 269 and 161 in the Birmingham Test.
13.And if that was not enough, Shubman Gill is the first Indian captain (in fact the first Asian captain) to win a Test match at Edgbaston.
