Shreyas Iyer is likely to be back in India’s T20I and Test squads. He last played a T20I for India in December 2023 against Australia and a Test match in early February 2024 against England in Visakhapatnam.
Iyer’s return follows a good show in the IPL 2025. The 30-year-old Mumbai batter played well for Punjab Kings after they bought him for a big Rs 26.75 crore in last year’s auction. Sources say his form has caught the eye of the selectors as they prepare to announce the squads for the Asia Cup in the UAE and the two-Test series against the West Indies in India.
The team wants his experience and skill in the middle order for all formats, something they missed during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in England. Selectors also know he handles spin well, which will be important during the home season with four Tests scheduled—two against the West Indies and two against South Africa.
In his Test career, Iyer has scored 811 runs in 14 matches, with an average of 36.86. He has five half-centuries and one century. After being dropped from the Test team in 2024, he proved his mettle by scoring 480 runs in five Ranji Trophy matches, averaging 68.57, including two centuries.
Iyer made his T20I debut for India on November 1, 2017 against New Zealand in Delhi, though he didn’t bat in that game. Since then he has played 51 T20Is for India, scoring 1104 runs with eight half-centuries.

Over the last two IPL seasons, Iyer has been a consistent performer, scoring 955 runs in 31 innings with an average of 45.48 and a strike rate of 163.5. With India and Sri Lanka co-hosting the 2026 T20 World Cup, Iyer’s skills against spin and ability to increase the scoring rate in the middle overs could be important for the Indian team playing in those conditions.
There are other decisions to be taken as well. Young openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who were rested from recent T20Is, are in the fray for a comeback. There is also uncertainty over the captaincy. Regular T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is recovering from surgery. If he is not fit, Hardik Pandya will be the captain.October 2-5, Ahmedabad & October 10-14, Delhi
