On Tuesday August 12, 23 year old fast bowler Jayden Seales wrote his name into the history books. He became the first West Indian to take 6 wickets in an ODI against Pakistan.
Seales from Trinidad & Tobago led the West Indies bowling attack in the 3rd and final ODI against Pakistan at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba. He finished with 6 wickets for 18 runs in 7.2 overs.
In that last game Seales wasted no time, dismissing Saim Ayub the left handed opener on the 3rd ball of Pakistan’s chase. Ayub was caught behind by Shai Hope for 0. Seales then followed up by taking the wickets of Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan in the first 3 overs and had Pakistan in trouble at 8-3. He then trapped Babar Azam the key Pakistani batsman lbw for 9 and effectively ended Pakistan’s chances of winning the series 2-1.
Pakistan captain Rizwan said, Seales put us under pressure throughout the series. Losing those early wickets really hurt us.
In the middle overs left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie picked up 2 wickets. Later Seales came back to dismiss the tailenders Hasan Ali and Naseem Shah to complete his 6 wicket haul.
Before Seales’ performance the best bowling record for a West Indian against Pakistan in ODIs was held by Franklyn Rose who took 5 wickets for 23 runs in 10 overs in a match in Kingstown on April 12, 2000.

Seales’ 6 for 18 are now the 3rd best for a West Indian bowler in ODIs. Only Winston Davis who took 7 wickets for 51 runs against Australia in 1983 and Colin Croft who had 6 for 15 against England in 1981 have done better. His 6/18 also beat Dale Steyn’s record for the best bowling figures in an ODI against Pakistan. Steyn had 6 for 39 in a match in Gqeberha on November 27, 2013.
Thanks to Seales’ career best bowling the West Indies bowled Pakistan out for 92 while chasing 295 and won the 3rd ODI by 202 runs.
Shai Hope said, We tend to focus on the negatives in West Indies cricket but there are so many good things happening. It’s great to see the guys making history. He also praised Seales, Seales is a good bowler; he always steps up when asked.
