New Chandigarh, April 1, 2026: Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been hit with a hefty fine of INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL match against Gujarat Titans at the New Chandigarh ground on Tuesday, March 31.
The penalty has been handed down under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which specifically deals with minimum over-rate offences. The first innings took a rather sluggish turn, taking close to two hours, which is far from the strict rule set down in the tournament, which stipulates that the 20th over must start within an hour and 30 minutes.
To make things worse, the Punjab Kings bowlers gave away 14 extras, including 11 wides and a no-ball, which further delayed the proceedings. As a direct consequence, the team has been forced to field an additional member within the 30-yard circle in the final over of the innings played by the Gujarat Titans, which has placed them in a disadvantaged position.
This is the latest in the IPL’s zero-tolerance policy on over-rates, which is designed to ensure timely completion of matches while maintaining fair play. While the Punjab Kings are yet to comment on the incident, it could potentially affect them in the coming matches.
