Last season was tough for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They finished at the bottom of the Indian Premier League (IPL) table in 2025, which is the worst they have ever done. Out of 14 league games, they won only 4 and lost 10.
Though CSK had some good players, overall they didn’t fire and that’s why they finished last. Looking ahead to the next season and the IPL 2026 auction, CSK will definitely make some changes. They will release some of the expensive players who didn’t perform and keep the talented players and experienced ones.
Who could be released due to High price and low impact?
- Ravichandran Ashwin: CSK spent INR 9.75 crore on Ashwin in the IPL 2025 auction but he didn’t justify the price. In 9 games he took 7 wickets and his economy rate was 9.12. It won’t be a surprise if he’s released before next season.
- Devon Conway: The New Zealand batter Conway cost CSK INR 6.25 crore in the IPL 2025 auction. Unfortunately he had a season to forget, scoring 156 runs in 6 games, averaging 26.00 with a strike rate of 131.09. Releasing him would free up some much needed funds.
What could be the CSK squad before the IPL 2026 Auction?
Here’s a possible picture of CSK’s team after retentions and releases:
- Retained: Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni, Matheesha Pathirana, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Noor Ahmad, Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre, Urvil Patel, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed, Nathan Ellis Vansh Bedi, Vijay Shankar, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Sam Curran and Rachin Ravindra will likely stay with the team.
- Released: Ravichandran Ashwin, Devon Conway, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Jamie Overton, Gurjapneet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary, Shreyas Gopal, Shaik Rashed, C andre Siddarth, and Kamlesh Nagarkoti could be out.
How much money will CSK have for the IPL 2026 Auction?
If CSK releases the players above, they will have a good amount of money. Since some of these players have big contracts, the franchise will have some money to spend in the IPL 2026 auction.
