Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has some doubts about 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made a name for himself with Rajasthan Royals. Yograj thinks the real test for the young player will come when he plays red-ball cricket and proves he can handle all three formats, not just limited-overs matches.
Suryavanshi caught attention by becoming the youngest player ever signed in an IPL auction for the 2025 season. Due to injuries and lack of options at RR, he got his chance early and made the most of it, scoring a century off just 35 balls against Gujarat Titans, one of the toughest teams in the league. That was the second-fastest century in IPL history and he finished the tournament with an average of 252 runs in seven matches, strike rate of 206.55.
Yograj, who is also the father of legendary cricketer Yuvraj Singh, spoke to InsideSport, “Can he survive five days? That’s the real test of a cricketer. He emphasized that while 50 and 20 overs are okay, his focus is on Test cricket. You should be fit enough to play all three formats. Why struggle? If you only focus on T20 and IPL, then you miss out.
He also pointed out the disconnect between coaches and players, “All the coaches want to sit in air conditioning. Meanwhile, I’m out here in 48-degree heat, trying to develop more talented cricketers like Yuvraj Singh.
The young talent from Bihar has played five First-Class matches but hasn’t had much success yet, 100 runs in 10 matches at 10. He also played six List-A games, 132 runs in 6 matches at 22. But he’s kept his form going after the IPL. At a training camp in Bengaluru, he scored 190 runs off 90 balls against Under-19 players, gearing up for an upcoming England tour with the age-group team.
