The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is waiting for the Indian government’s approval to confirm the national team’s participation in the 2025 Asia Cup. Even though the BCCI is supposed to host the tournament, the Indian government will make the final call, and a decision is expected soon.
The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to begin on September 5, but India’s participation is uncertain because of recent military tensions stemming from the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. This decision is very important for planning the tournament.
Cricbuzz reports that the BCCI will probably announce India’s participation in the 2025 Asia Cup soon. Sri Lanka or the UAE could host the tournament, but the final choice remains.
A big question is whether India will play against Pakistan, given the existing military tensions. The final decision will depend on the Indian government’s stance on relations with Pakistan, considering the current geopolitical situation.
According to the report, “A decision on the Asia Cup is expected in the next few days. It depends on the BCCI’s position on the championship, which includes Pakistan, a recent military conflict participant.”
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC), led by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, has asked the BCCI to clarify India’s participation in the event with less than two months before the Asia Cup. The ACC is worried that the continued uncertainty is hurting commercial and marketing plans.

The ACC wrote to the BCCI, “We have been told that without this information, their ability to plan well, assign resources, and run their campaigns is greatly limited. The media rights partner has pointed out obligations under the agreement that start 60 and 90 days before the 2025 tournament. Our sponsorship rights partner, TCM, has pointed out commercial worries, especially regarding the timelines for proper monetization and activation planning.”
If the Indian government doesn’t allow the team to play in the Asia Cup, the BCCI may consider holding a tri-series during the same time. There have already been postponements, including India’s scheduled matches against Bangladesh.
