Shreyas Iyer has been doing well in domestic cricket and the IPL but has not made it to the Indian team yet. As the team heads to England for a 5 match Test series, his absence is raising questions. After he was not picked, the management was grilled and former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly spoke up. He feels Shreyas should be in the Test team.
Despite a good show in recent games, Shreyas hasn’t played for India in Tests since February 2024 against England. Now as the team goes to England with Ajit Agarkar leading the selection panel, Shreyas is surprisingly left out. Ganguly didn’t mince words on this decision saying in an interview that Shreyas has been doing well and should have been included.
He said Shreyas has been consistent and has taken pressure well. Ganguly said even though Test cricket is a different ball game, he would have liked to see what Shreyas could have brought to the team in this series.
With big names like Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli retiring, India is in transition under Shubman Gill’s captaincy. When asked if India can continue their winning streak, Ganguly was optimistic. He said all they need is good batting and Jasprit Bumrah to be fit. He recalled that they won in Australia with a young team when many big players were missing.
