Greg Chappell, the old India coach, thinks the next Test at Old Trafford in Manchester will be a big test for Shubman Gill. Gill needs to stay calm so his team can stay in the series.
Gill has been playing with a lot of energy in this series. He even acted like Virat Kohli when he got a century at Edgbaston in 2018. He has been batting well, got a hundred at Headingley and then a record breaking century and a double century in the second Test at Birmingham.
If India loses at Old Trafford, they won’t have won a Test series in England for a long time. So, Gill has a lot of pressure on him.
Chappell wrote in his ESPNcricinfo column that the Old Trafford Test will be a big test for Gill, as a batsman and as a leader. He is still learning but he doesn’t have much time. He has to bring calmness and self assurance to a team that really needs it and he has to do it now.
He doesn’t mean he can’t show how he feels. It was good to see his energy on the field at Lord’s. Getting in Zak Crawley’s face about wasting time only means something if he is working hard behind the scenes.
Gill scored 16 and 6 at Lord’s. India lost by 22 runs even though Ravindra Jadeja and the lower order tried to make a comeback.

Chappell also wrote that even though India was in a good position, they messed up again, mainly with the bat. Only Rahul, Pant and Ravindra Jadeja did well. The Lord’s Test also showed how Jadeja was handled towards the end of the match.
Chappell wondered that when only the tailenders were left, Jadeja did what many specialist batsmen do in that situation: he shielded the tailenders, kept the strike and played carefully. It looked like a disciplined innings but was it the right way to play?
