India lost their first match on this England tour on Friday. The five-match T20I series is still alive at The Oval. Chasing 171, India scored 166 in 20 overs. England won by 5 runs and India’s lead is now 1-2.
England could have scored more. India took 9 wickets in the fewest balls in international cricket history, men and women combined. At 137/0 in 15.1 overs, England looked like they would get a big total. At that point Deepti Sharma gave India their first breakthrough by dismissing Sophia Dunkley (75 off 53). That’s when the collapse happened. England lost 9 wickets in 25 balls, a new international record. They added only 31 runs in that period.
Earlier this year in a Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier match in Bangkok, UAE retired all 10 batters after reaching 192/0 in 16 overs against Qatar. This was the first time in T20I history (men and women) that a team retired more than 2 batters in an innings. As a result UAE had 8 ducks. Qatar was then bowled out for 29. The match had 15 ducks, the most in women’s T20I history.

After England’s 5 run win, the series is not over yet. Dunkley was the player of the match for her 50 which had 7 fours and 1 six. The 4th match is on July 9 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
