When Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams took the field on Friday during their respective matches, the players were seen wearing black armbands in memory of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92 in Delhi. He was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for treatment, where he took his last breath.
The soft-spoken politician served as India’s Prime Minister for a decade, starting from 2004 to 2014. Prior to his PM stint, Singh also worked on bringing financial reforms to the country.
“The Indian team is wearing black arm bands as a mark of respect in the memory of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away,” the BCCI said in a statement.
The Men in Blue are featuring in the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne, which is part of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian women’s cricket team, on the other hand, is taking on the West Indies in the third ODI match in Vadodara.
