On Wednesday, May 12, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, MI achieved a massive 59-run win against DC in the 13th IPL 2025 game. This win now confirms MI’s presence in the playoff phase of the tournament. Currently holding fourth place on the points table, they have 16 points from 13 matches.
Now that the playoffs are secured, MI pushes toward achieving a finish in the top two to secure an entry into the first qualifier being played at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on May 29. The top two teams gain direct entry into the first qualifier, and the winner of the first qualifier is then promoted to the finals, while the loser gets a chance to contest the second qualifier against the winner of the eliminator for the second position in the finals.
How do MI seal a slot in the top two?
MI will become table toppers with 18 points if they register a win against Punjab Kings in their last game at Jaipur on May 26 and if Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and PBKS lose both the matches. MI will be above GT due to a superior net run rate.
If GT wins at least one of their remaining two matches; that is against LSG at Lucknow on May 22 and against CSK at Ahmedabad on May 25, then MI will never finish higher than GT in the standings.

MI will finish as the second-ranked team if MI beats PBKS, RCB loses both of their last two matches, and PBKS loses to Delhi Capitals. If both RCB and PBKS win matches in their last two, then MI cannot claim second rank even if they do beat PBKS. RCB will be up next against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday in Lucknow and then with Lucknow Super Giants on May 27.
Meanwhile, Punjab Kings has matches left against Delhi Capitals on May 24 and then against Mumbai Indians on May 26.
Mumbai last topped the table in the 2020 IPL season, where they ultimately lifted the trophy.
