England announced the playing XI for the first ODI against India at Nagpur in 2025. Joe Root had been back with the team for the first time after the 2023 World Cup in India and was slotted back into his favorite position at number-three.
In otherwise resembling nearly the same side that succumbed 4-1 against India in the recently-concluded T20I series, Root has replaced quick bowler Mark Wood to provide an extra spin option. An ODI as usual? Captain Jos Buttler in this instance would promote himself down to number five.
White-ball success, including three half-centuries in the SA20, stands behind him. His ODI numbers are quite decent 6,522 runs from 171 matches at an average of 47.60 and a strike rate of 86.77. Root has seena 16-centuries and 39-fifties.
“Root kind of a player, so all formats being played here, has been such a long time, a key player for England in ODI cricket,” Buttler said to the [Press] on Saturday, a day ahead of the first ODI in Nagpur.
“Lots of experience in ODI cricket – that would serve the guys who probably haven’t played as much in our group really well. He has been a key player for England across all formats, and we feel he plays a crucial role for us in these games.”
This will be the last bilateral commitment for both India and England before the 2025 Champions Trophy. This time around, England would be hoping Root could provide some solidity, a bit more prowess against spinners, and more essentially, exploiting spin to beef up their batting order after being utterly outdone in the T20Is.

However, yet another record eludes Root, seeing him without an ODI century in India. In 16 matches on these shores, he has accumulated a total of 571 runs at 40.79, with the top score being an 82 in 2013.
