Joe Root, the English batting star, has heaped praise on Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj after his tireless effort on Day 4 of the Oval Test. Root called Siraj the embodiment of fighting spirit in today’s cricket. He did, however, take a dig at Siraj’s on-field anger.
Root’s comments came after battling Siraj in his own 105-run innings. He saw firsthand how Siraj’s skill and endurance has made him the top wicket-taker of the series.
Root Discusses Siraj’s ‘Fake Angriness’
The former England captain spoke about Mohammed Siraj’s on-field attitude after the day’s play.
Sometimes he acts angry. I can see right through it. He’s a nice guy, but he tries to look tough, Root said.
Root’s breakdown showed the mental game Siraj plays, a fierce competitor who becomes a smiling man after the game. Root spoke of Siraj’s key contributions to the series and noted his determination.
He’s a character, a fighter. There’s a reason he has so many wickets—his hard work and skill, Root said. The praise meant even more coming from a batter who has faced Siraj’s bowling more than any other English player this series.

Root Praises Siraj’s Work Ethic
Joe Root openly admired the Indian bowler’s work ethic, saying how he bowled long spells without complaining.
It’s because of his hard work and skill set. I like playing against him. He always has a smile and gives everything for his team. You can’t ask for more than that as a fan. He’s a great example for any young player, Root said about Siraj.
Siraj, who led the Indian attack as Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t playing, bowled 52 overs in two innings. He took 6 wickets while keeping up intense pressure.
England needs 35 more runs and India needs 4 wickets on the last day. Siraj’s long spells and Prasidh Krishna’s ability to take wickets have kept India in the game.
