Rajasthan Royals (RR) director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara revealed that Yashasvi Jaiswal has a nickname within the team – Joeswal. This is because he is always around England batter Joe Root.
Sangakkara told Sky Sports that Jaiswal would spend hours asking Root questions or just listening to him.
Sangakkara said every young player he meets has the same passion but they need to understand the current cricket scenario. He believes career lengths will decrease which is already happening. He also said Jaiswal will need to manage his body and workload. He recalls having Joe Root at Rajasthan Royals and they would call Jaiswal Joeswal because he was always by Joe’s side, soaking in everything.
Root is one of the best batters in the world but never got the full confidence of IPL teams. Even with RR, he played only 3 matches and batted once. Yet he mentored Jaiswal.
Sangakkara said their talks weren’t limited to T20; they would talk about all aspects of cricket and life. Jaiswal would sit with Root for about 4 hours every night, asking questions or listening intently. Root was great in their team environment and Jaiswal learned a lot from him, showing he is a quick learner and eager to improve.
