In the 2024 IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad went wild, twice smashing the record for the highest innings total in the league’s history. First, they beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s 2013 record of 263/5 by scoring 277/3. Then, they almost hit 300, posting an amazing 287/3 against RCB. With records being broken so fast, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa is making some big predictions for the 2025 IPL.
Uthappa knows the IPL well. He played for six different teams, including Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, RCB, and the old Pune Warriors.
Uthappa, 39, retired from Indian cricket in 2022 and now does commentary. He thinks the IPL is now the top T20 league in the world.
Things have changed so fast that some people can’t keep up. Cricket used to be a bit romantic, but now it’s faster, more exciting, and full of energy. The IPL has become the main T20 league—it’s really come into its own, Uthappa stated.
Uthappa, who scored 4952 runs in 205 IPL matches with a strike rate of 130.35, believes we might see some big things happen soon, such as a team scoring 300 runs in an innings, 1000 sixes being hit, or a team chasing down 275 runs.
Even though it feels like we’ve seen everything, I’m sure there’s more to come, Uthappa said. This season, we might see 1,000 sixes, a team scoring 300 runs, or a team chasing over 275 runs. We could even see a double hat-trick or someone scoring over 150 runs. With the IPL, just when you think you’ve seen it all, the game surprises you!
