Sanju Samson had to leave the field after getting hurt during a match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2025 on Wednesday, April 16. The game took place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, and it was match number 32 of the season. While RR was chasing runs, there came a moment in the final over of the powerplay when Samson seemed to be in pain. The team’s physiotherapist rushed in to check on him after he appeared to be struggling a bit.
On the third ball of that over, Samson made an attempt to hit a delivery from Vipraj Nigam, but he completely missed it. Right after that, replays showed he was grimacing, indicating he was feeling some discomfort. The physio examined his left side, specifically around his ribs. To help him, Samson took a tablet during a longer-than-usual break in the play. He came back to bat, but after just one more ball, he decided it was best to step away for good. Samson had scored 31 runs off 19 balls before leaving the field, which included two fours and three sixes. Riyan Parag took his place at the crease.
Following a tough loss for the Royals, which went down to the Super Over, Samson addressed his injury in the post-match presentation. He mentioned, It feels alright. I was just not ready to come back and bat here. We’ll keep an eye on it tomorrow and see how it is. Unfortunately, injuries have been a recurring issue for him this season. Earlier in 2025, during a T20I against England at the famous Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, he got hit on his finger by a ball bowled by Jofra Archer. That injury kept him from playing for his team in the Ranji Trophy.
The situation got serious enough that he even had to go through surgery for a fracture in his right index finger. During the first few matches of IPL 2025, he played as a specialist batter while Riyan Parag took over the captaincy. The Royals’ next game is against Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday, April 19, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. If Samson isn’t able to play, Parag is likely to step in as the team leader again.
As for Samson’s performance so far this season, he’s appeared in seven games and managed to score a total of 224 runs. He has an average of 37.33 and his strike rate is pretty impressive at 143.58, with his highest score being 66 runs against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Fans and teammates will be hoping for his speedy recovery so he can return to form soon.
