Despite the England and India series being underway, attention turned to the Ashes in Australia during the fifth Test. A funny moment occurred when former English cricketer Stuart Broad was commentating.
On the second day of the fifth Test between England and India at the Oval, former English captain Michael Atherton, who was commentating for Sky Sports Cricket, brought up Stuart Broad’s contract with Australia’s Channel 7 for the Ashes later this year. Atherton said Australian publications like The West Australian and the Brisbane Courier Mail had accused Broad of cheating during the Ashes, even calling for him to be banned and labelling him Australia’s number one enemy.
Stuart, Atherton said on Sky Sports, the news from Australia seems to have been received poorly. You’re going to be commentating on a local channel during the Ashes.
Atherton added that the publications were calling him a smug, pommy, cheat and wanted him banned from Australia.
Just a reminder of your popularity there, Atherton said. The Brisbane Courier Mail couldn’t even put your photo on the front page and called you a smug, pommy cheat, Broadban. Are you excited to commentate on the Ashes in Australia this winter?

Everyone around him laughed, including Stuart Broad who was commentating at the time.
Broad replied that he agreed with being called a pommy and a cheat, but not smug, as he doesn’t think he is self-satisfied.
I agree with the pommy and cheat part, but I don’t think I’m smug, Broad said.
Back in the 2013 Ashes, Stuart Broad became a villain for the Australian side after one infamous moment. In the first game of the Ashes at Trent Bridge, Broad edged a ball to slip where Michael Clarke was fielding. Ashton Agar’s delivery got the edge, but the left-handed batsman didn’t walk and umpire Aleem Dar ruled him not out. The media and fans in Australia were outraged, calling him a cheat and a disgrace and booing him every time he came out to bat in Australia.
The Ashes 2025 should be good, five Tests starting November 21st in Perth and finishing between January 4th and 8th at the SCG, where the fifth Test is.
