As the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) draws near, the teams are starting to get a feel for what lies ahead. The initial matches have created quite the buzz. Right now, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is at the top of the points table, having won both of their opening games. Not to be left behind, Delhi Capitals also boast a flawless record from their first couple of outings.
In a video that has gone viral, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag took the chance to poke fun at RCB. He referred to them as ‘gareeb,’ which means ‘poor’ in Hindi. It’s kind of surprising, especially since RCB is currently leading the standings. Sehwag’s remarks were a playful jab given the team’s strong start and his witty way of pointing out that RCB has yet to win an IPL title, despite their success on the field so far this season.
He shared a light-hearted comment on Cricbuzz: “Let the poor be on top of the IPL points, let them click photos. Who knows for how long they will be at the top?” Sehwag’s style was always a mix of humor and sharpness, and even if he was cracking jokes, there was a deeper point in there about teams that haven’t yet had their moment in the spotlight of winning the tournament.
Virendra Sehwag trolled both Kohli and RCB at the same time😹😭🤣

Sehwag, who carved out a fabulous career as a batsman, knows the sting of not having an IPL title himself. He played for Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings but never got to lift the trophy. He went on to clarify that his ‘gareeb’ comment wasn’t about money because all teams bring in hefty earnings, usually around 400 to 500 crores every season. Instead, he was highlighting teams that have struggled to win even a single title.
Looking at the current setup, it’s interesting to note that among the IPL franchises, RCB, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants are still without a championship. However, Lucknow Super Giants only entered the league in 2022, so they’re still fairly new on the scene.
With the season progressing, plenty of fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how these teams fare and whether RCB can maintain their spot at the top of the points table or if they’ll stumble as the season goes on. It’s all part of the excitement that makes the IPL so thrilling to watch, where anything can happen and where even playful jabs can carry deeper meanings.
