The Ahemdabad-born cricketer suffered a
back injury during the fifth India-Australia Test match in January 2025. He exited the match midway through Day 2 for scans and didn’t bowl again in the second innings due to a back spasm.
There had been questions over Bumrah’s availability for the Champions Trophy since January 4, 2025, yet nevertheless, he was included in the provisional squad announced for the ICC tournament by the BCCI on January 18 in Mumbai.
Bumrah played his last ODI match for India against Australia on November 19, 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He took two wickets that match, but was unable to guide the Rohit Sharma-led side in overcoming Pat Cummins & Co. to win the 2023 ODI World Cup title.
Bumrah’s last match for India in white ball was a T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa, taking place at Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29, 2024. The right-arm fast bowler took two wickets in the match and contributed to India’s title victory. For his superb performances in the tournament with the ball, Bumrah was awarded Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The official update on Bumrah’s injury is still awaited from the board, and it remains to be seen whether he would be fit enough to participate in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians. Bumrah had made his IPL debut in 2013 and was retained for Rs 18 crore by the Mumbai-based franchise before the IPL 2025 mega auction.
