West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has broken a 59-year-old record while playing a Test match in Pakistan. Apparently, he took seven wickets in the second innings of the first Test played last week. In the first Test played in Multan, the Caribbeans were trailing by 93 runs after the first innings. The North America-based team needed to bowl out the home team cheaply so that they chase a modest target.
Warrican took seven wickets for 32 runs, bowled 18 overs and bowled three maidens as well. He took the wickets of debutant Mohammad Hurraira, former skipper Babar Azam, Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan, Noman Ali, and Sajid Khan. With this effort, Warrican became the second spinner from the West Indies to take a five- wicket haul in Pakistan. Despite the left-arm spinner, Warrican’s best efforts, Pakistan managed to ask West Indies to chase 251 runs.
This was always going to be a tough target on a wicket that was turning from the first day of the game. The wicket was assisting the spinners, so much so that the Maroon Brigade asked another left-arm spinner, Gudakesh Motie to share the new ball with Jayden Seales, the fast bowler. Talking about the match, West Indies lost the game by 127 runs as they were bowled out for 123 runs.
This series has no bearing on the World Test Championship 2025 finals race as South Africa and Australia have already made it. However, both Pakistan and West Indies are looking to avoid last place finish.
Jomel Warrican breaks Sonny Ramadhin’s record
Previously, Sonny Ramadhin took a five-wicket haul as a spinner in Pakistan. However, this was combined by three wickets in the first innings and two in the next innings. The Test match was played in Dhaka, which was part of Pakistan in 1959. Despite his efforts, Pakistan won the Test match by 41 runs. 66 years later, Jomel Warrican suffered the same agony as his seven-wicket haul couldn’t prevent West Indies from losing.
