Batting superstar Virat Kohli will be a major player for India in the 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy starting from Wednesday, February 19. Eight teams are going to have a stake in this Champions Trophy, while the Indian men’s cricket team plays all its matches in Dubai.
Kohli had a horrible run in form during the five-match Test series in Australia last year but managed to score 52 runs in the last ODI match against England at Narendra Modi Stadium on February 12. The Indian team management and fans will now want Kohli to keep up the same form through the Champions Trophy and help India clinch the Champions Trophy title for the third time in history.
During the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Kohli, with 13,963 runs under his belt in 297 ODIs so far, will have the opportunity to breach records galore.
1.Quickest to 14k runs in ODIs:
Kohli has made runs amounting to 13,963 throughout 297 ODIs played for Team India. If he scores a minimum requirement of 37 runs in the Champions Trophy, he will become the world fastest batsman to have registered 14,000 runs in ODIs. As of now, only two players—Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara—have more than 14,000 runs to their credit in ODIs. Tendulkar crossed the 14K mark in his 350th inning of the 359th ODI, while Sangakkara did it in his 378th inning during the 402nd match. Kohli has thus far played 285 innings.

2. 3rd leading run getter in international cricket:
The right-handed batter might surpass Ricky Ponting as the third-leading run-scorer in international cricket if he scores a minimum of 103 runs in the Champions Trophy 2025. From August 2008 to the present, during his debut with the Indian national team against Sri Lanka, Kohli has played 545 matches in various formats and scored 27,381 runs. Thereby he would surpass Ponting’s mark set during a 17-year-long international career with 560 matches played for Australia and 27,483 runs amassed.
3. Leading run getter in the ICC champions trophy :
Kohli debuted for India in this tournament back in 2009, and he has already featured in 13 matches for the competition so far, racking up 529 runs. Thus, he is the most successful active player in the Champions Trophy in terms of runs. If the former India captain accumulates at least 263 runs in the next edition of the tournament, he will breach the record of 791 runs set by former West Indies captain Chris Gayle and become the all-time highest run-scorer in the history of the tournament.

4.Most half centuries in Champions Trophy:
Kohli has scored five half-centuries for India in 13 Champions Trophy matches played so far. If the 36-year-old right-handed batter manages to score at least two fifties in the Champions Trophy 2025, he will break Rahul Dravid’s record of most half-centuries (6 in 19 matches) in the Champions Trophy.
5. Player with most ICC trophies:
If India clinches the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy, Kohli will become the joint-most successful player to win most ICC trophies Kohli, who has won one ODI World Cup (in 2011), one Champions Trophy (in 2013), one T20 World Cup (in 2024), and one U19 World Cup (in 2008) as an India player, will equal Ricky Ponting’s record of doing so. As an Australian player, Ponting won three ODI World Cups (1999, 2003, 2007) and two Champions Trophy (2006, 2009) titles.
