Bangladesh got bowled out in two matches in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. They have lost the matches by India and New Zealand while Bangladesh’s way of going out of the tournament was by losing its matches.
Bangladesh was able to lose against India by 6 wickets and was then lost in the match against New Zealand by a margin of 5 wickets. After their elimination, Pakistan great Wasim Akram lashed out against Mahmudullah of Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh veteran made only 4 runs in 14 deliveries as he was sent back by Michael Bracewell, with Will O’Rourke taking a catch after Mahmudullah tried to go for a big heave.
In New Zealand innings, simple-looking catch miss of Mahmudullah relieved Rachin Ravindra at mid on, who notched his hundred and was on 105 then. In the comments after the match, Wasim Akram called him as below, “That was a sitter! Mahmudullah lagda hai chhuti de aaya hai (Mahmudullah looks like he has come here on vacation). Na batting ho rahi, na bowling (He’s unable to bat or bowl).”
The 39-year-old did get a run out to his name as he found Tom Latham short of the crease but it did not have much bearing on the result. “This is a learning curve for Bangladesh cricket. They’ve brought guys like Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim who are already 39 and 37 years old. Prepare young men for whiteball cricket and let those veterans go red if they want to – whiteball cricket is all about fearlessness. This is what Bangladesh should think of, preparation of a team towards next year’s T20 World Cup,” he added.
Wasim Akram though praised Nahid Rana, who dismissed Kane Williamson.
“First time I saw Rana bowl. Look at the ball he bowled to Williamson, pace, carry, swing, everything. Zabardast! I like the celebration too. Hardly any. Sometimes youngsters go overboard with their celebrations,” said Akram.
