Afghanistan opening batter Ibrahim Zadran has registered the highest individual score in the history of the ICC Champions Trophy. The Asian side won the toss and elected to bat first against England in a must-win game of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Both teams lost their opening matches against South Africa and Australia respectively.
Meanwhile, in the ongoing match against the Three Lions, the Afghans were reduced to 37/3 by Jofra Archer’s good bowling. In reply, Zadran and ODI skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (40) put together 103 runs for the fourth wicket. The latter was cleaned up by leg-spinner Adil Rashid. However, this wicket brought Azmatullah Omarzai to the crease and he hit 41 off 31 balls including three sixes and a four.
Omarzai and Zadran put together 72 off 63 balls for the fifth wicket before the former got out to Jamie Overton. Former skipper Mohammad Nabi came in and scored 40 off 24 balls including three sixes and two fours. He and Zadran put together 111 off just 55 balls.
Ibrahim Zadran hit 177 off 146 balls and helped AFG post 325/7
The Blue Brigade, after being reduced to 37/3, have managed to score 325/7 at the end of their innings. Opening Zadran scored 177 off just 146 balls including 12 fours and six sixes during this innings. With this, the right-hander has registered the highest individual score in the history of the tournament. He went past Ben Duckett’s 165 which he scored against Australia last weekend.
Notably, the England opening batter, Duckett will be in action as the two-time finalists pursue the chase of 326 to keep the semis hopes alive. At the time of writing, the first innings had ended with Jofra Archer finishing with 3/64 in 10 overs. Mark Wood has sustained knee trouble which is why he bowled only eight overs. Liam Livingstone and Joe Root had to complete Wood’s overs.
