Glenn McGrath, the Aussie cricket legend, thinks Jasprit Bumrah needs to focus more on his fitness when he’s not playing if he wants to have a long career. Bumrah, the Indian fast bowler, has had some injury problems lately. McGrath mentioned recently that Bumrah has figured out ways to handle the stress on his body, but because he bowls so fast, he needs to be careful. McGrath even brought up his own career, saying he could bowl for longer because he wasn’t as fast as Bumrah.
He puts his body through a lot. He’s learned to deal with it, but it doesn’t always work. He’s come back from injuries before, so he knows how long it takes to recover and how much time he needs in the gym. He’s not as young as he was, so he has to be smarter about what he does, McGrath told the Times of India.
He needs to train even harder when he’s not playing. Being a fast bowler is like driving a car. If you don’t fill it up with gas, you’ll run out. I could bowl longer than Jasprit because I wasn’t as fast. These guys know what works best for them. If India is in trouble, they need him, he said.
Bumrah will probably miss the first few IPL 2025 games for the Mumbai Indians because he’s still recovering from a back injury that’s kept him off the field since January.
Bumrah got hurt during the second day of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney. He didn’t bowl in Australia’s second innings, where they chased 162 to win by six wickets.
Bumrah took 32 wickets in five matches in that series but has been out ever since. He also missed India’s Champions Trophy win.
He was on India’s preliminary squad for the ICC event, but he couldn’t get fit in time, so Varun Chakravarthy was chosen instead.
He’s recovering well. But right now, it’s better to give him more time to get back to his best, especially with India’s Test series against England coming up in June, a source told PTI.
