Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill thinks T20 cricket is getting to the point where teams might start hitting 300 in an IPL innings. He chatted about why the IPL is a smash hit, pointing to the Impact Player rule and the constant stream of fresh talent.
Gill was chatting with JioHotstar before the 2025 IPL season kicks off on Saturday. The Titans are playing Punjab Kings at home on Tuesday, March 25. He started leading the team last season and has been a popular player in the league since he started back in 2018.
The game’s moving so fast, it feels like we could see a 300 score soon. We almost got there a few times last year. That Impact Player thing really spices things up and makes the IPL even more fun to watch. One of the coolest things about the IPL is that there’s always some new player stepping up and killing it.
You always see guys who aren’t that well-known putting on amazing shows. The way the tournament is set up, with all the games and travel, keeps everyone in it. If you’re winning, you just keep rolling, maybe get three, four, or even five wins in a row. But injuries can screw things up.
When you lose a couple of big players, it’s tough to find good replacements. Even with these problems, the IPL is still the most exciting cricket around, and there’s always something fresh every season for both the players and the fans, Gill told JioHotstar.
Talking about being captain, Gill went on to explain how he tries to keep his roles separate as a leader and as the team’s main batter.
When you’re batting, you just need to think about batting. If you start stressing about being captain while you’re at the crease, it can mess up your game. Batting is just you against the bowler, but fielding is everyone working together. That’s where being a leader really matters, with the fielding and planning, Gill said.
When I’m batting, doesn’t matter if I’m captain or not, I’m just trying to win the game for my team. Last year, I got caught up in my head sometimes, and it hurt how I played. I’ve learned I need to keep being captain separate from my batting and just focus when I’m out there, he finished.
