Virat Kohli, the face of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), is back in top form this season. He’s not just piling up runs; he’s also been a great teammate, helping others shine as well. The focus for him and the team is all about winning, and he’s showing just how much that matters. Some people think Virat brings his ego into play, but in a chat with the IPL broadcasters, he shared that his ego has never been a big part of his game.
So far in IPL 2025, he’s often taken a step back to let skipper Rajat Patidar lead the way. During an interview on JioHotstar, Kohli pointed out how he didn’t mind letting Shreyas Iyer take the spotlight in the ICC Champions Trophy. He explained, If you think about one of the recent games in the Champions Trophy, Shreyas stepped up. It’s not about ego at all. If I’m in a good rhythm, I’ll naturally take charge, but if someone else is better positioned to step up, they should take it on. It’s all about reading the game, and that’s something I value a lot.
Kohli also reflected on his early days with RCB. Playing alongside legends like Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis made him realize he had to step up his game. He kept his focus and worked hard to improve. When I first joined RCB, I didn’t get many chances to bat at the top of the order. They often sent me in lower down the lineup. It was tough to make a mark in the IPL at first, even though I had a few standout moments. The 2009 season was a turning point for me. The pitches suited my style, and I could really express myself with my batting.
Starting in 2010, I began to find my groove, and by 2011, I was regularly at number three. That’s when I really felt like my IPL career was starting to take off. He’s come a long way since then, proving time and again that he can adapt and perform under any circumstance. Kohli’s journey is a testament to hard work and the willingness to put the team first, and it shows in how he plays today.
