In the post, Mathews expressed his gratitude for having represented Sri Lanka for 17 years in Test matches and thanked his family and fans for their support throughout the years. With his dependable technique and fluent style of batting, he debuted in the Test arena against Pakistan at Galle in 2009. Alongside his batting, Mathews became increasingly vital for Sri Lanka after the retirements of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
