In one-day internationals, England created a new record for the highest team total scored without a batsman reaching a century, scoring 400/8 against the West Indies. At Edgbaston Birmingham, this unheard-of victory came by way of a 238-run margin on Thursday. Winning the toss and electing to bat, England’s innings was set afire by Jacob Bethell’s calculated blazing 82 runs in just 53 balls, along with half-centuries from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Brook, much to the chagrin of what was a struggle for the West Indies’ in bowling.
This was the highest score for England against West Indies at home in this format and thus made a hard day for the visitors who were bundled out for just 162. Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton grabbed three wickets each, and Brook took five catches. Only Keacy Carty and captain Shai Hope were able to get past 20, with Jayden Seales throwing in a pretty useless 29 towards the end.

What a perfect start this was for Brook as the new white-ball captain, making this the second-biggest win for England, only behind the 242-run win against Australia in 2018. Bethell was also instrumental with the ball and was named the Man of the Match: at his home grounds, he scored heavily in a brilliant seventh-wicket partnership of 98 with Will Jacks. He hit eight fours and five sixes before finally being dismissed by Hope.
England had a robust initiation, with the openers Smith and Duckett managing 59 within six overs. Having scored 37 runs, Smith was dismissed, caught off Joseph’s bowling. Root entering the crease meant continuous attacks until Duckett, on 60, was brilliantly caught by Roston Chase off Justin Greaves. Root put on 57 and Brook 58, but it was Bethell who shone.

The West Indies were presented with an uphill task, and after Mahmood snagged an early wicket, things quickly began to slide for them. Carty and Hope tried to stage a fightback, but the pair fell cheaply, and the innings was falling apart. Bethell cleaned up Jewel Andrew as well, and there was no coming back for the rest of the team. England will want to build on this win when they meet again on Sunday at Cardiff.
