Shubman Gill had a great start to his captaincy on Friday, scoring a hundred and helping India get off to a flying start against England at Headingley. He’s the fifth Indian captain to score a hundred in his first match, joining the likes of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Virat Kohli.
But there’s trouble brewing for Gill as he might get fined by the ICC for not following the dress code. He wore black socks when players are supposed to wear white, cream or light grey in Test matches. If he’s found guilty, he could lose up to 20% of his match fees. But if he can prove it was an honest mistake, he might escape the fine.

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and put India in to bat on a hot day in Leeds. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul got off to a good start with a 91 run partnership. Brydon Carse broke the partnership by getting Rahul (42) caught by Joe Root and in the next over Stokes got debutant B Sai Sudharsan for a duck.

The first session was a draw but India really took control in the second and third session. Gill and Jaiswal along with Rishabh Pant were looking good, Jaiswal scoring 101, his third hundred overseas and Gill 127*, his sixth Test hundred and first outside Asia. They added 129 runs for the fourth wicket before Stokes got Jaiswal out. Pant (65*) then joined Gill to take India to 359/3 by the end of the day.
