Teams in IPL 2025: Will IPL 2025 have 12 teams?
No, as per the present news and updates from the BCCI. IPL has a total of 10 teams in the current format and there is no news on increasing these numbers to 12. In recent times BCCI has invited these 10 franchises to discuss the details of the upcoming season which ended without any consensus among the franchises. After the conclusion, Jay Shah released a press news saying that-
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday organized a constructive dialogue with the owners of the 10 franchises on various subjects pertaining to the upcoming season of the TATA IPL.
The franchise owners tabled feedback on player regulations and other commercial aspects, including central merchandising, licensing, and gaming.
The BCCI will now take these recommendations to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations.”
This press release marks a clear indication on the number of the franchise for the IPL 2025. So for the upcoming edition of the IPL the numbers of the teams would remain limited to the current 10 teams.

At present these are the ten teams for the IPL 2025 and these are the names of the captains who have led the team in the IPL 2024 Season. But as the mega auction is scheduled to take place in the month of the December to February these captains can be changed and the franchise can bring on new captains for the 18th season of Indian Premier League 2025.
For IPL 2025, some teams are likely to retain their current captains: Hardik Pandya for Mumbai Indians, Sanju Samson for Rajasthan Royals, Ruturaj Gaikwad for Chennai Super Kings, Pat Cummins for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shreyas Iyer for Kolkata Knight Riders, and Shubman Gill for Gujarat Titans.
However, four teams are expected to appoint new captains. Royal Challengers Bengaluru may bring in KL Rahul to replace Faf du Plessis. Lucknow Super Giants are likely to part ways with KL Rahul, potentially bringing in Rohit Sharma, who is expected to leave Mumbai Indians. Delhi Capital might also bring on a new team captain as Rishbah Pant is likely to join the CSK and also the Punjab kings might also seek a new captain as the current skipper Shikhar Dhawan might move out of the team due to his injury related issues.
