Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian T20 star, spoke about the sacrifices he made to play for India. He also talked about the role his wife, Devisha Shetty, played in his career.
They appeared on the show Who’s the Boss? with Harbhajan Singh and his wife, Geeta Basra. Suryakumar recalled how he felt around 2016. He was doing well but not getting selected for the national team.
I was happy then. I was okay with whatever happened. I liked playing but I slowly realized there was a higher level to reach, he said.
He said Devisha changed his mindset. He loved cricket but didn’t have the drive to push himself until Devisha came into his life.
I was lost when she came. I saw my friends less, stopped going out late and stayed in on weekends. We worked on good practice sessions and I became more disciplined, he said.
Devisha, a classical dancer, said she only gave her husband small pushes to stay focused. They got married in 2016. Devisha saw that Suryakumar had skill but needed to use his energy better.

He wanted to play for India but he needed a stronger reason. He wasn’t getting that from anywhere so I gave him emotional backing, she said. She said they didn’t worry about instant success. They just worked on making small improvements in their lives. When we got married I realized he needed a push. It took a year to explain that friends are important but work is more important. You must stay sharp and protect your time and energy, Devisha added.
After a tough season with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, Suryakumar is taking a break as he doesn’t have any international games till October. Because the Bangladesh tour was changed, his next job will be leading India in a T20I series against Australia. Till then Suryakumar will probably spend time with his family and get ready for the international season.
