After a mixed day in the fourth Manchester Test against England, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel spoke about Jasprit Bumrah’s struggles with the new ball. He said Bumrah hasn’t had enough support from the other bowlers and that’s why they aren’t putting enough pressure on the batsmen.
In this series Bumrah has taken 13 wickets at 26.69 with two five-fors. He has got rid of openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett early on but hasn’t done much with the new ball. He has taken wickets when the ball is old.
Morkel said he spoke to Bumrah about this. Bumrah is very skilled and wants to do well with the ball.
Morkel said Bumrah needs support from the other end and it’s hard to create pressure from both ends which is affecting their bowling.
Morkel said for Bumrah to do better the other bowlers need to work with him. The other bowlers are trying too hard for wickets and giving away runs.
He said Bumrah feels the pressure. Morkel also said Bumrah is number one in the world and very skilled. Sometimes he will get wickets but he needs help from the other end.
Morkel also spoke about why Kuldeep Yadav isn’t playing and Washington Sundar is instead. He said the team is trying to find a way to include him but India is losing wickets fast so they need a longer batting line up.
He said Kuldeep is world-class and bowling well right now. They are trying to find a way to get him in the team but it affects the batting balance.
The bowling coach said this Test series is a real test of the team’s bowling depth. Mohammed Shami isn’t there to support Bumrah and there are many new players like Prasidh Krishna, Anshul Kamboj, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep. They are trying to get used to playing five-match Test series.

He said they usually play shorter series and this is the first five-Test series in a while. It can be hard to get the players ready for five Tests straight after the IPL. They have to balance Test matches with giving the players enough recovery time while also keeping up their bowling.He said they need to look ahead and have a good pool of 5-6 bowlers to rotate. Then new guys can come in and do the job. Right now there is not much experience. Siraj and Bumrah have played a lot of Tests and Akash has played a bit but he is injured.
He ended by saying they keep bringing in new players who are learning international cricket. It’s not easy right now but it’s a phase they have to go through to get the players fit and strong for 5 Tests.
