Bumrah’s absence from the final Test against England at The Oval has everyone wondering about his future in Test cricket.
Given his injury history, it’s unlikely he’ll be available for a full five-match series anytime soon. The next one isn’t until 2027, against Australia at home. He played three of the five Tests in England, kept his word. Even so, fans and cricket legends like Anil Kumble wished he could have played the final match, given the series was on the line. His release from the squad made people talk.
India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, said Bumrah’s availability is tricky. Since his back is fragile after two surgeries, the team decided to respect his decision made before the series began.
India will play only two-Test series against West Indies and South Africa soon. Important white-ball events include the Asia Cup in September and T20 World Cup early next year.
A BCCI source said, The Asia Cup and T20 World Cup are coming up. He’ll want to play in those. Considering his body, he can’t play every match. He needs special care. Playing him at The Oval would have been too risky.
There needs to be a clear plan for how to manage Bumrah’s Test career.
Bumrah, 31, bowled almost 120 overs in three Tests, took 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. India won only one series at Edgbaston when Bumrah was resting.
He’s one of the best bowlers, but should he get to pick and choose games, given the risks? Is it fair to other Indian fast bowlers? Mohammed Siraj, for example, played all five games.

Doeschate said, I don’t think it’s fair to say Bumrah is picking and choosing. He said he would play three games and let us pick which three. We’ve managed it, but it’s hard on the guys who aren’t playing, mainly when you bring 18 players. It’s important to give attention to the guys who aren’t playing. They’re upset when left out, but they don’t show it, which helps the team’s culture. He was referring to players like Arshdeep Singh, who didn’t get a spot in the eleven during the 50-day tour.
Most questions after day one at The Oval were about Bumrah.Doeschate said, It’s a tough situation. We want him to play, but we respect his body. We didn’t think it was worth including him in the squad.
Bumrah, 31, became a T20 star but quickly gained respect in Tests after his debut in 2018.
After the England series, the Indian team will review the tour. A big question will be Bumrah’s Test future. Should he play in big series or focus on one format? The answer will be out soon.
