The Asia Cup team selection is around the corner and names like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are in the mix. We should know the team by third week of August.
Sources in The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) say the selectors haven’t locked anything yet. They are watching closely as the Test series against West Indies is just a week away. How India does in the Asia Cup, especially if they reach the final on September 28 will play a big role in who gets picked. The first Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad is on October 2.
Let’s see why these three are being considered. In the last Indian Premier League (IPL), Jaiswal scored 559 runs at 160, Gill wasn’t far behind with 650 runs in 15 matches and a strike rate above 155. Sudharsan who opens with Gill for Gujarat Titans scored 759 runs at 156.
One BCCI source told PTI, There is a five week gap and without any cricket happening, these three should be definite choices for the T20 team, even Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are playing very well. If a team plays all the way to the final in the Asia Cup, that’s six T20 matches in three weeks. That’s not too heavy a workload. Since Asia Cup squads can have 17 players, the selectors will have to think carefully about their options. The source asked not to be named.
Since the Asia Cup will be played in UAE pitches and T20 World Cup is just six months away, it makes sense for Jaiswal, Gill and Sudharsan to secure their places at the top of the batting order.

Sudharsan who played his first One Day International (ODI) in late 2023 has been in very good shape in T20 matches.
Also everyone is keeping an eye on Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. The team is being careful with these two fast bowlers as they play in all three formats of the game. Word is they will have to pass fitness tests before the selectors meet to make their choices.
