Mohammed Kaif feels Shubman Gill might soon captain the ODI team. He said it’s not clear how long Rohit will continue to lead the ODI side. Gill showed his leadership skills as Test captain in England where he led India to a 2-2 series tie in his first time as Test skipper.
Many were shocked when Gill was made Test captain for the England tour, especially since there were more experienced players available. Even with the backing of head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, some people still doubted the choice.
But now Kaif supports Gill to lead India in ODIs as well, given the questions around Rohit’s future in international cricket. Kaif said on his YouTube channel that Gill is ready to take over as ODI captain as they don’t know how long Rohit will continue in the role. Gill has been scoring runs in white ball cricket. He did well as captain in the Test series in England, leading from the front.
Kaif said when you have a young team, you need to score runs and do well as captain, it was a great tour for Gill. He also said Gill made the most of the opportunities he had as captain in the series. When he was appointed captain many people questioned why he was chosen, looking at his Test record.

Right now ODIs are the only format where Rohit is playing actively. He stopped playing T20Is in June 2024 after leading India to T20 World Cup win in Barbados. Then he surprised everyone by retiring from Tests in May, just before the team for the England tour was announced.
There’s a lot of talk around Rohit’s ODI future, but BCCI said when he retired from Tests that he will continue to be the captain in 50 over format.
After 25 days of Test cricket, Team India will get a break. There are no Tests or limited overs matches till Asia Cup 2025 which starts in September. It’s a long break for the Indian cricket team and fans will have to wait to see their favourite players in action again.
