Navjot Singh Sidhu, the former cricketer turned commentator, has come to the defense of Gautam Gambhir. This after India’s 2-2 draw in the Test series against England. Sidhu asked those who had criticized Gambhir, will you now appreciate him?
In a passionate video on his YouTube channel, Sidhu praised Gambhir for his belief in the team when they were under pressure during the tour. This was after senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had retired from Test cricket.
Sidhu pointed out how we tend to blame Gambhir whenever India loses. We idolize people. But I want to say that whenever India doesn’t play well, everyone jumps on Gautam Gambhir and puts the blame on him. So will you stand up and appreciate him today? asked Sidhu to those who had doubts about Gambhir’s skills and leadership.
Sidhu also said that using wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav could have been a good option. He praised Gambhir for sticking to his plans despite the criticism and for giving chances to young players.
Gautam Gambhir was the one who pushed for this change, who gave opportunities to players like Akash Deep and Washington. Yes, maybe Kuldeep would have been a better choice. But Gambhir had faith in his decisions. There will be room for improvement in future. But for someone who has been doubted and criticized so much, he deserves to be recognized today, Sidhu said.

Sidhu further added, The team went into the series with many new faces who hadn’t yet proven themselves. Gambhir had said that even though three or four important players were missing, it was an opportunity for others to prove themselves. His words turned out to be true. Young players have made history in Brisbane, Perth and England, that’s a big achievement.
Gambhir started the series under pressure after a loss at home against New Zealand and a tough tour of Australia. But with a new emphasis on a long term plan and young players, India team’s performance in England has given back the confidence.
