Shami was recently seen talking about how everyone, even the new guys on the team, calls him Lala. He finds it funny because he doesn’t even know why they call him that. It’s weird because Lala is a name some people use for Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistani captain, or for jewelers in some parts of India. He even joked if they call him that because of his weight.
Indian cricketers having nicknames is super common. Like, everyone knows Kohli was called Cheeku when he was younger, and Sourav Ganguly is Dada.
Shami has been dealing with some injuries that kept him out of the Indian team for a while. He played in the T20I series against England when he came back but he wasn’t at his best and didn’t get picked for the Test tour of England.

He said in the interview that he’s been putting in work to get his fitness back and feels better now. Things are better now, thank god. I’ve been training for the past couple of months, working on my skills, losing some weight, and pushing myself harder.
I’m hoping I’ll see the results soon. Right now, I’m focused on getting my rhythm back and being able to bowl for long stretches. I’ve also been practicing my batting and fielding, and I’ve been spending a lot of time in the gym. I’m feeling good overall, he said.
Someone asked Shami if it’s tougher to bowl to Kohli or Rohit Sharma in the IPL. He praised both of them, saying, I haven’t come across a batter yet who keeps me up at night or makes me stressed before a game. It just depends on who’s having a good day. Both of them are awesome players and legends in Indian cricket. They’ve both made a big impact.
Shami said bowling to Cheteshwar Pujara would have been a real challenge. He said he felt lucky to have played with Pujara, who recently retired from Test cricket, on the same team.
Shami didn’t make the cut for the England tour, apparently because the selectors were worried about his fitness. He also didn’t get picked for the Asia Cup. Now Shami is looking to perform well for East Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy and remind the selectors what he’s capable of.
