BCCI has asked MS Dhoni to mentor the Indian team again. This time it seems like the job would be bigger, covering senior, junior and women’s teams.
With Gautam Gambhir being the head coach after ICC T20 World Cup 2024, this news is creating quite a buzz. Some think the BCCI wants Dhoni to keep an eye on things since some of the decisions Gambhir has taken since he took over have been quite controversial.
Dhoni is a legendary captain, he has given India many reasons to celebrate. He is still the only captain to have won all the major ICC white ball tournaments.
Sources say BCCI has offered him a mentorship role. He was offered something similar in 2021 during the T20 World Cup when Ravi Shastri was the coach.

But this time BCCI wants Dhoni to be involved with all the teams, hoping he can share his vast knowledge with the young players.
Dhoni is one of the best captains India has ever had and has a sharp mind for the game. His guidance would be really helpful in shaping the next generation of Indian cricketers. That’s why the BCCI reached out to him.
If Dhoni agrees it would be his first official role with the Indian team since he retired in 2020.
But it’s not that simple. With Gambhir as the head coach, it’s not clear if Dhoni would want to work with him. There is history between them and some think Dhoni might not want to risk any conflicts.
Dhoni is still playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He even led them in IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured. There is no official word from Dhoni or CSK but some think this might be his last season and he is focused on winning a 6th title with the team. It is also possible that if there is any tiff between Dhoni and Gambhir which can hinder the progress of the Indian team in any way then Dhoni would stay away from the team.
So that there would be no environment created that would affect the motivation of the players. If we look at the record of Dhoni then it is quite clear that the veteran player is more into letting his work be the noise rather than creating some scene that would attract the media. If things between Dhoni and Gambhir get sorted out then we can expect to see Dhoni in a new role in the Indian team.
