Scoring a century is a pleasure for a batter and making it a double hundred is a double pleasure.
There have been several Indian batters who have hit double centuries during their Test match. But how many of them have done it while being the captain of the Indian team?
Let’s discover the answer here. The names of the Indian captains who registered double centuries in Test cricket are given below.
Indian Players To Score 100 On Captaincy Debut
1. Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi
Before Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi took the reins, India had 13 Test captains. Pataudi two years into his captaincy did what none of his predecessors could do.
He became the first Indian captain to score a double century in Test cricket. The right-handed batsman scored an unbeaten 203 against England in the 1964 Delhi Test.
His composed innings included 23 fours and 2 sixes. This was Pataudi’s only double hundred in the longest format.
2. Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar came up next with his only Test double hundred as the Indian skipper in 1978. He was leading the side against the West Indies at the Wankhede.
And Gavaskar did not surprise you. He led when others found it difficult to cope with the Windies bowling.
The batter from Mumbai took on the whole Indian batting lineup. He scored 205 with the aid of 29 fours and 2 sixes.
3. Sachin Tendulkar
During his career, Sachin Tendulkar achieved a double century in Test matches six times. Notably, the first of these monumental runs was scored under India’s captaincy in Ahmedabad.
The Indian batters had already posted five centuries for the captaincy, while Tendulkar converted his sixth hundred into a big double century of 217 runs after India had started their innings poorly at 102 for 2.
Tendulkar’s innings led the Indian team to declare at 583. The match didn’t finish with a winner but his innings gave the Indian team a little advantage.
4. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni surpassed his predecessor’s score in the early days of 2013. In the very first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), he was in great form against Australia.
When MSD came to bat, India was already doing quite well at 196 for 4. He even strengthened the captaincy further by his batting.
The wicket-keeper and captain made a total of 224 runs, hitting 24 fours and 6 sixes. It is still the highest score made by a wicket-keeper and captain together in Tests.
5. Virat Kohli
Do you know how many Test double centuries Virat Kohli scored? Not one, not two, but a total of seven. And all of them were while he was leading the Indian team.
The first of them all—a perfect 200—was against the West Indies in 2016. Besides that, Kohli made two additional double tons that year 211 vs New Zealand and 235 vs England.
He did the same in the next year as well. Early in 2017, he scored 204 against Bangladesh and then by the end of the year, he already had 213 and 243 against Sri Lanka which were his two double hundreds.
Kohli then two years late, came up with his highest Test score. He managed to break the 250-run mark against South Africa and thus India got a huge victory.
6. Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill is the latest newcomer. Unlike the rest of the players on this list, Gill took advantage of his second Test as India’s skipper.
His captaincy started with a 147-run increment in the first Test. And he went one step higher in the second game.
Gill was very much in charge on a great pitch in Birmingham. He contributed a 269-run performance, the largest for an Indian Test captain. The Indian batsman made his innings more entertaining by hitting 30 boundaries and 3 sixes.
