The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at long last did what some thought was impossible, they got rid of Andre Russell after a decade plus of highs and lows. The tattle was that the IPL 2026 auction on the 16th of December now had one of the biggest names sitting right at the front, and the teams were well aware they were not just vying for an all-rounder.
Firstly, they were vying for the most lethal death-overs hitter in the history of the league, the guy who became the fastest to hit 200 sixes and the only player apart from Ravindra Jadeja to go past the 2000 runs and 100 wickets milestones in this tournament.
Even with a rather uneventful 2025 compared to his usual standards, Russell’s fame is enormous. Teams do not realize what he offers until he comes in. He can change a run chase in a matter of ten balls, he can bowl the unattractive overs and apart from that, KKR has already won him for the 2014 and 2024 titles plus 2015 and 2019 individual awards. He will be sought-after, almost unavoidable, but there are still some teams that do not actually require his services at this moment. To start with, we will spotlight three clubs that shouldn’t try to drive up the price of Russell.
IPL Teams Unlikely to Bid for Andre Russell in the 2026 Auction
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
Andre Russell at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is a huge and an epic idea. But, hold on, the reigning IPL champions simply do not want him. While it is already predicted that a player of his caliber would clear the boundaries with ease at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium (if RCB plays there next season), there might not be any space for him at this moment.
The straightforward response to this is Tim David. He has completely changed his game and was a key player in the success of RCB this season. David was a steal at Rs 3 crore with a record of 187 runs at an average of 62.33 and at a strike rate of 185.15. RCB also boast of Romario Shepherd who is currently a better bowler than Russell. Hence, RCB is absolutely not in need to get Andre Russell
Mumbai Indians (MI)
If the Mumbai Indians (MI) team brought Andre Russell into their fold, it would become an unbeatable team. No doubt, the most dreaded team in history. But, with not even Rs 3 crore left in their purse right now, they have absolutely no chance of signing the Caribbean giant. Besides, MI already has the Indian stars who are occupying the most important slots in their batting line-up, so they are well-equipped in this regard.
Additionally, through a great trade with the Gujarat Titans (GT) of Sherfane Rutherford, MI have not only their batting but their finishing sorted too. With Hardik Pandya, Rutherford, and Naman Dhir, MI have the option already on the table. They might want to bring in another hitter, but as they have the lowest budget, MI will have to look for a less expensive option.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
At the moment, Rajasthan Royals (RR) might not have a roster that is capable of winning an IPL. But, fellows, they have done a wonderful job and one does not really need someone like Andre Russell. If they had to release Shimron Hetmyer who is on a Rs 11 crore contract, the case would have been different. But RR has a packed middle-order and that’s why too much overlap is created. With Riyan Parag, possibly the next captain Dhruv Jurel, Hetmyer, new recruits Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, RR has no more room.
In addition, the acquisition of Donovan Ferreira is very intriguing, as he might just prove to be an unappreciated finisher for the team. The South African is having an excellent 2025, having scored 721 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 191.75 (only 3 batters have a better SR than him this year in T20s and he is one of them). Besides, with RR having Rs 16.05 crore, it is very important for them to invest in their bowling department. Hence, put Russell out of the equation for the first champions.
