As the Indian team gears up for its next assignment, the conversation around the dressing room has quietly shifted toward a bigger picture: building a squad capable of winning the 2028 T20 World Cup. The selectors are no longer just picking eleven for the next game; they are auditioning candidates for a tournament that is still years away but already shaping selection logic. CricketBuzz understands that team management is keen to use every upcoming series as a testing ground rather than a formality.
Sanju Samson remains at the centre of this churn. Despite flashes of brilliance behind the stumps and with the bat, his place is far from guaranteed, with younger wicketkeeper-batters pushing hard for recognition. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose fearless strokeplay has already turned heads, is being watched closely to see if his game translates consistently against top-tier bowling attacks. Both players know that a few failed outings could tilt the balance in favour of rivals waiting in the wings.
New Faces Eye Their Moment
The pace battery is also under the microscope. Mayank Yadav, known for his raw speed, and Prince Yadav, a promising talent from the domestic circuit, are being given extended opportunities to prove they can handle the pressure of international cricket. With pitches across upcoming series expected to favour high-scoring, batter-friendly conditions, India’s bowling unit will need to adapt quickly, mixing pace variations with smarter death-over execution. As CricketBuzz reported earlier this month, team think tanks are already experimenting with combinations that balance explosive batting with control in the final overs.
What makes this phase particularly intriguing is the depth India now possesses. Established names can no longer assume automatic selection, while uncapped players are being backed with genuine chances rather than token appearances. This competitive churn, while uncomfortable for some, is exactly what a long-term World Cup campaign demands. The next few months promise sharper contests for places, bolder team selections, and perhaps the early blueprint of the squad that will chase glory in 2028. Stay with CricketBuzz for more as these selection battles continue to unfold.
