The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has gained a lot of attention and notoriety in a remarkably short time. The WPL isn’t just a big deal in women’s cricket; it’s the biggest one!
The more the competition heats up, the more important it becomes how each team is put together. And this leads us to wonder, what is the number of players that can be there in each WPL team?
So, in the WPL, What is the Biggest Squad Allowed?
To tell you the truth, the most players per team in WPL is 18. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the teams must also sign at least 15 players.
In contrast, each IPL team may form a squad of 25 players. Hence, the number of players on each squad in the WPL is significantly less than in the IPL.
However, there is still a similarity in the player acquisition process. In the WPL, teams can also acquire players through a mixture of retentions and auction picks.
Now, let’s Shift our Focus to the Overseas Players in the WPL. How Many of Them are Permitted?
Just like in the case of the IPL, the overseas players have always been the top picks in the WPL. There’s a high demand for them, but there’s also, without a doubt, a limit.
WPL team roster can have a maximum of six foreign players. Thus, it gives the team a total of two less than the eight permitted in the IPL.
So, the WPL will Have Four International Players in the Playing XI?
Yes. However, the number can be increased up to five foreign players.

The thing is that the WPL permits the fifth foreigner in the playing XI if the player belongs to an associate member country.
What is an Associate Member Country?
The countries whose national teams do not play Test cricket. Thus, any player from non-Test nations falls into this group.
In case an associate nation player is fielded in the XI, he will be treated as a domestic player and not as an overseas one. Hence, WPL sides can have five foreign players in the playing XI.
What Would the Final Playing XI Composition in the WPL be?
In that case, if a team indicates four foreign players, then seven Indian players will be in the playing XI.
And if a team begins with five foreign players, one of whom is from an associate country, then the playing XI will consist of six Indian players.
