The first Test of the five-match series between India and England begins at Headingley in Leeds on June 20. Ben Stokes is the England captain while Shubman Gill leads the Indian team which is going through some changes. Both teams will look to start strong in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle after missing out on the final at Lord’s where South Africa won the trophy.
This series has a new trophy called the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in honour of two cricket legends James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. The winner will lift this new trophy after the five-match series.
India is in transition with big names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and R. Ashwin leaving the team. England captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum have some decisions to make about their batting order. Ollie Pope scored a century against Zimbabwe recently but his spot isn’t guaranteed as Jacob Bethell is also in good form.
Pitch Report
As for the Headingley pitch, it’s known to be tough for visiting teams. Fast bowlers get help from the surface especially with the Dukes ball moving around. But since it’s been a dry summer this pitch might be a bit flatter than normal although pace bowlers can still get some help in the first two days.
Weather Forecast
Looking at the weather, Day 1 will be cloudy with rain expected to cause delays on the next days. Temperatures will range from 17°C to 30°C during the Test.
