Abhishek Nayar, the former Indian cricketer and coach, is the new head coach of UP Warriorz in WPL. He takes over from Jon Lewis, the former England player, who was with the team for three years.
Nayar will work with Deepti Sharma, who will be the captain this season. She replaces Alyssa Healy who is injured.
Nayar has a lot of cricket and coaching experience. Before retiring in 2019, he played 3 ODIs for India and was a main player for Mumbai’s domestic team. From 2018 to 2024 he was the coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL. KKR won the IPL title in 2024 with his help.
He was also the assistant coach for Team India under head coach Gautam Gambhir when they won the Champions Trophy. In 2022 he coached Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
After being out of the Indian team for a while, he went back to KKR for 2025 IPL season. Now he is joining UP Warriorz.
UP Warriorz have not won a WPL title yet. They finished 5th last season with 3 wins and 5 losses.
With Nayar as the new head coach and Deepti Sharma as the new captain, the team hopes to start fresh and do better in the next WPL season which should start in February next year.
