Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann was reported for a suspect bowling action following his lordin role in the Test series win in Sri Lanka, Cricket Australia said this Wednesday.
Left-arm spinner Kuhnemann took 16 wickets in helping Smith’s men home in a two-Test series this month and now has to prove through testing that his action is within the law.
“The Australian team was made aware of this referral after the second Test completed against Sri Lanka in Galle and supported Matt throughout the process,” CA noted.
Since his debut in 2017, Kuhnemann has played 124 professional matches that include five Tests, four ODIs, and 55 T20 Big Bash League games.
“During this eight years of professional cricket, this is the first time his action has ever been questioned,” CA noted.
Meanwhile, Cricket Australia will work closely with the International Cricket Council and independent experts in line with ICC regulations.
Cricket rules recommend a bowler’s arm can flex 15 degrees, but anything beyond that is deemed illegal.
Local reports suggest that the 28-year-old will likely be tested at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, with the results being fed back to the ICC.
If his action is found to be illegal, he would face a suspension from bowling until the action is corrected and cleared in a subsequent assessment.
