The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided a substantial update concerning the Indian captain Shubman Gill’s injury. The board, however, has reassured the public that Gill will be part of the Indian squad that travels to Guwahati for the second Test against South Africa, starting on November 22.
Gill’s injury had cast serious doubts about his being able to play. On Day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens, the Indian captain hurt his neck while trying to execute a sweep shot. Gill immediately dropped to the ground suffering from pain, holding his neck, and he had to be carried off the field with a stretcher.
The 26-year-old batter was taken to the hospital afterward for scanning and treatment. Luckily, he was released the following day, but the injury was still a concern. Due to the neck problem, Gill was unable to bat in India’s second innings. His absence proved costly as India collapsed and lost the match by 30 runs, thus giving South Africa a 1-0 advantage in the two-match series.
In the following days, multiple reports emerged indicating that Gill had been advised not to fly due to the neck injury, which led to confusion regarding whether he would suit up for the next match..
BCCI Issues an Official Statement Regarding Shubman Gill’s injury.
However, the BCCI cleared all doubts by releasing an official statement on their social media platform, X.
“Shubman has been showing good progress and will join the team in Guwahati on 19th November, 2025.”
In light of the captain’s doubtful fitness condition, the Indian team has recalled Nitish Kumar Reddy into the squad. Reddy was initially released for India A, where he played adequately in the unofficial ODIs.
Reddy’s inclusion gives India an extra option in both batting and fast-bowling, since Gill’s participation is still uncertain.
