Former wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik feels India should make the most of Jasprit Bumrah’s limited playtime in the first, second and fourth Tests in England. There’s enough time between those matches for him to recover. During the squad announcement for the tour, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had mentioned Bumrah is advised not to play back-to-back Tests due to workload management. This was after he had a stress reaction in his back during the fifth Test against Australia in January.

Bumrah missed the Champions Trophy but returned to play for the Mumbai Indians in the recent IPL. At the pre-departure press conference, head coach Gautam Gambhir said they haven’t decided yet which Tests Bumrah will play. Former cricketers have been talking about the best way to use the 31-year-old and Karthik believes Headingley, Edgbaston and Manchester are the best spots for him to play.
India has a week off between those Tests, so Bumrah has time to get fit again before he takes the new ball. I think he’ll play three Tests. I think he’ll play one, two and four because there are enough breaks, Karthik said on the Sky Sports podcast.

If they go into the fourth Test down or up in the series, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ask him to consider playing in the fifth Test, he added. In his previous Tests in England, Bumrah has taken 37 wickets in nine games at an average of 26.27, with an economy rate of 2.72.
