England was dealt a tricky blow when the fast bowler Josh Tongue sustained an injury in the unofficial Test against India-A at Northampton. He had to leave the field on Day 3 of the match. England, led by Ben Stokes, is brushing up for a hard-hitting and full-length series against India comprising five Tests at home, while some of the other players from the squad are currently playing this unofficial series for practice.
Tongue was only allowed to bowl about four overs before walking back to the dugout. He was a tad bit off the rhythm, giving away some runs-wicketless in the process. But no words yet on the extent of the injury, thus rendering it a bit of an open question if he’ll be able to turn up and play the Headingley Test. In the previous outing against India-A, despite picking up a couple of crucial wickets, he was expensive with his bowling figure leaking away 91 runs in 20.3 overs.

Before these unofficial tests, Tongue represented England in a one-off fixture against Zimbabwe, snagging two wickets for 121 runs. Should he be ruled out of the first Test against India, England might rely on Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Sam Cook for the bulk of their fast bowling duties, with a little bit of medium pace thrown in by Ben Stokes.
