India will begin a five-Test series against England on June 20 at Headingley. Before the tour, the BCCI has planned a press conference involving new Test captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir. This was Gill’s first media interaction since taking over from Rohit Sharma, who has retired from Test cricket. The absence of Sharma and Kohli and the stepping back of Ravichandran Ashwin in December 2024 mark a new beginning for Indian cricket.
Gambhir discussed the stress involved in coaching the Indian Test team, particularly after winning the Champions Trophy just recently. He is aware of the expectations, especially after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy went South 3-1, and wants to prove himself with this young line-up.
Gill expressed his views on the captaincy and adaptation of the team without the veterans at just 25 years of age. As India goes forward with this important tour, all attention will be on how this young side handles the challenge. Some Indian cricketers have already landed in the UK for unofficial Tests with the India A team, which takes on its next match starting June 6. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, among others, are expected to feature there.
